Stockholm is not called the Venice of the north for nothing. It is one of the worlds most beautiful capitals built on 14 islands and many smaller ones.

With its 30,000 islands the Stockholm archipelago is the perfect place to explore the Swedish nature. And the best way to experience it is by traveling with ferry from island to island or by simply hopping on a sightseeing boat. If feeling adventurous, there is definitely a lot to do and see: explore the archipelago by hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking or biking. It is also possible to stay overnight by camping or taking in at a hostel. Experiencing the beauty of the city from the water is a must.

Major Sights in Stockholm

Gamla stan, also called “Old town”, is one of the major attractions in Stockholm and an incredibly popular area with both tourists and locals. It is one of the best preserved medieval areas in all of Europe. Gamla Stan is perfect for sightseeing or having a bite in one of the cozy cafes or restaurants. One can also find all kinds of souvenirs and handcrafted art in many of the surrounding shops. There are also a few churches and museums in the area. One can easily spend a few hours in Gamla Stan enjoying the unique and special atmosphere.

If interested in history, the Vasa Museum is a must. The museum's centerpiece is a seventeenth century ship – the only one in the world. It sank on its first voyage in Stockholm in 1628, and was brought up from the water 333 years later in 1961 which is also when restoration work began. The 226 feet long ship is decorated with carved sculptures, which makes it a very unique art treasure.

Art lovers will enjoy Sweden’s largest museum named National Museum, a striking structure inspired by Florentine and Venetian Renaissance buildings. The museum offers an array of exhibitions and is located on a stunning part of the city called Southern Blasieholmen.

Stockholm City Hall - Where the Nobel Banquet Takes Place

The City Hall is one of Stockholm’s most notable landmarks. The fine architecture of this national romanticism structure includes the Golden Hall, with its 18 million gold mosaic tiles. This is where Nobel Prize recipients dance after the great Nobel banquet, which is held in City Hall every year. A guided tour is the only way to see the inside of the City Hall, and they are offered frequently. One can also climb up inside the tower and enjoy a fantastic view of the city.

World Class Attractions in Stockholm

Drottninggatan is a long busy street filled with stores and cafes, perfect for shopping or strolling around. It is nearby Hötorget, a big market where nearly anything can be found, everything from flowers and fresh fruit to handmade items.

Stureplan, an upscale area, is excellent for those who would like to enjoy high end nightlife, with many classy bars and clubs to choose from. In the daytime this area is perfect for high end shopping, including some of the worlds most luxurious brands.

There is also more than enough to do for kids with options such as the Aquaria Water Museum, Skansen (a zoo) and Gröna Lund, which is an amusement park sure to satisfy both smaller and bigger kids.

Stockholm offers all of this and much more, with its unique mix of world class museums and attractions, history, sight seeing, shopping, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. As if that wasn’t enough, breathtaking scenery is offered everywhere.
